Dario Marianelli nació en Pisa, y estudió piano y composición en Florencia y Londres. Después de un año como compositor postgraduado en la Guildhall School of Music and Drama, donde también fue Presidente de la Sociedad Contemporánea de Música, recibió una beca de la Fundación Gulbenkian para un curso impartido por Judith Weir y Lloyd Newson en Bretton University College, sobre el tema de la composición y coreografía. Otras becas le permitieron ir a Alemania para una serie de trabajos sobre Música de Cine Europeo, y pasar tres años en la National Film and Television School, donde se graduó en 1997. Durante los últimos años Dario ha escrito música para varias películas, dramas de TV, documentales, animaciones, teatro, danza contemporánea y conciertos. Ha escrito piezas orquestales para la Orquesta Sinfónica BBC y para la Orquesta Britten-Pears, música vocal para los BBC Singers, y música incidental para la Royal Shakespeare Company. Es autor de la música para la gran película romantica «Pride & Prejudice», la cual popularizó al intérprete Jean-Yves Thibaudet.


Dario Marianelli is set to reunite with Joe Wright on the director's upcoming movie adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel Anna Karenina. The movie stars Keira Knightley in the title role, Jude Law as her husband Aleksei Karenin and Aaron Johnson as Count Vronsky. Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, Matthew Macfayden, Olivia Williams, Domhnall Gleeson, Alice Vikander and Ruth Wilson are co-starring in the film. Tom Stoppard Shakespeare in Love, Empire of the Sun adapted Tolstoy's novel for the screen and Tim Bevan & Eric Fellner Love Actually, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Richard Webster Atonement, Eastern Promises are producing the Working Title Films production. Marianelli and Wright have previously collaborated on Pride and Prejudice, The Soloist and Atonement, the latter of which earned the composer his first Academy Award. The director's most recent film Hanna featured a score by The Chemical Brothers. Anna Karenina will be distributed in the US by Focus Features and by Universal Pictures overseas. A release for next year's fall season is planned.

As announced a few months ago, the composer has also scored Lasse HalLstrom's comedy drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen starring Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor and Kristin Scott Thomas. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and has been picked up by CBS Films for a domestic theatrical release on March 2, 2012
