'SIR, I HAVE FORGOTTEN AGAIN', is a divinely acted GHAZAL and MUJRA by Indian actress REKHA. REKHA said in the 80s, "It took me my whole life to understand how to properly mime these film songs and come into my full bloom as an actress! Then by the time you have learned you are starting to fade with age!". This song sung by PLAYBACK SINGER: LATA MANGESHKAR is from the 1984 HINDI film 'MATI MAANGE KHOON'. At this time REKHA may have been one of the most beautiful women in the world. She had a talent for these oriental MUJRAS that was also so beautiful in SUHAAG [Marriage] [1979] and her finest UMRAO JAAN [name of a court dancer] [1980]. In this song REKHA had met the actor watching, SHATRUGHAN SINHA, as a decent young lady in the street...then he comes upon her as SHAYAMLEE the COURTESAN thus she sings a GHAZAL regretting her 'real face'... The POEM is a like a GHAZAL [Urdu Poetic Song] where the RHYME is in COUPLETS, that is the last word in every two lines rhymes together. Simple meaningful words often filled with REGRET or LOST LOVE. Like REKHA'S dance, the performers would sing and then move around during the instrumental sections. There are GHUNGROOS [ankle bells] that tinkle as the feet move or stamp along to the RYTHME. The dance was usually KATHAK in the MUGHAL ERA. A tight bodice dress with flared skirt for spins and CHOORIDAR [tight trousers] underneath. Here REKHA has the MUGHAL dance and jewellery but the costume is a SAREE, making the dance look more flavoured from INDIA. The dance moves are KATHAK-LIKE using delicate hand, eye and head moves and holding pretty STATUE-LIKE poses. MELODY The tune is beautifully crafted by composer R.D. BURMAN. BURMAN was actually quite a MODERNIST in terms of film compositions, it is quite surprising that he was able to turn his hand very successfully to SEMI-CLASSICAL SONG FORMS too. The INTRO is TRADITIONAL in the sense that it is an ALAAP [opening section of long notes]. It is MODERN due to the VIBRAPHONE [electric xylophone] sounds followed by a QUASI-HARMONIC lines that spring up behind the singer in the VIOLINS, both padding and adding TENSION for the song and DRUMMING to start up. The TEXTURE is quite TRADITIONAL in being THIN with few instruments, rotating sounds from DRUMS, to VOICE, to STRINGS and DRUMS quite subtley allowing the ear to focus on a variety of small SOLOs.
